Rock adds veterans, familiar faces as it looks to climb Major Series standings The Oakville Rock approach the 2015 Major Series Lacrosse season with renewed optimism after a number of off-season moves. Newly appointed GM Josh Sanderson was busy after being named as a replacement to his father, the late Terry Sanderson. "I know how special this team was to my dad," said Josh. "I know he had a vision and a plan and I want to continue that for him and see it through." Fielding a fairly young team in 2014, the Rock finished with a franchise-best 6-12 record, narrowly missing the playoffs. Sanderson saw the need to add veteran leadership and toughness. The tournament is named in honour of the longtime volunteer and fundraiser for the Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association and Oakville Buzz, who died in November at the age of 86. There will be 10 teams in each of the midget, bantam and peewee divisions and eight in the novice and tyke divisions. Games begin Friday at Joshua's Creek Arenas, Maple Grove Arena, River Oaks Community Centre, Glen Abbey Community Centre and the Toronto Rock Athletic Centre (TRAC). Pool play continues Saturday and the playoff games will be played Sunday at the TRAC. Mark Oldershaw earned his third World Cup medal of the season, taking a bronze in the men's C1 (canoe singles) 1,000-metre race Saturday in Duisburg, Germany. It is Oldershaw's second straight medal in the Olympic event, having taken the gold the previous weekend in Portugal. Oldershaw also reached the final of the C1 500m, finishing ninth. He placed eighth in the C1 5,000m. Oldershaw's Burloak Canoe Club teammate Aaron Rublee earned a pair of medals. He paired with Maxim Poulin to take a silver medal in the C2 200m. Rublee and Poulin then added a bronze medal in the C4 200m, along with Ben Russell and Ben Tardioli. The three medals were among 10 won by Canada at the second of three World Cups. Oakville's Adam van Koeverden just missed the podium, finishing fourth in the K1 500m. KC Fraser helped the Canadian women's K4 crew finish fifth in the 200m. She was also a member of the crew that finished ninth in the 500m.
