Fire crews were called around 2:30 a.m., and reported smoke coming from windows upon their arrival, said Deputy Fire Chief Andy Glynn. The firefighters entered the home and discovered a blaze in a basement bedroom, which they quickly extinguished. No residents were injured during the fire as a trio of people had made their way outside before firefighters arrived. One man was taken to hospital a few hours later due to an unspecified medical emergency. It is unclear if the hospitalization was related to the fire and the man's condition was unknown as of press deadlines yesterday (Thursday, May 28). Glynn said the fire caused approximately $20,000 worth of damage to the home with fire damage to the basement and smoke damage throughout the residence. The cause of the fire is as yet unknown, however, the Oakville Fire Department's Fire Prevention Division is investigating. Glynn said the presence of adequate smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in the home is also being investigated. Oakville Fire reminds people it is the law to have a working smoke alarm on every level of a home and outside every sleeping area. The law also states carbon monoxide alarms must be placed near all sleeping areas of a residence.
