Police alarmed at car seat spot check failure rate by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Friday, May 29, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com After a spot check car seat clinic in Oakville Saturday yielded failure rates as high as 68 per cent, Halton police are calling on people with young children to do their homework and learn how to properly install a car seat. Police inspected 49 booster seats and found 58 per cent of them were improperly installed. Out of the 59 car seats examined, 68 per cent of them failed a basic safety inspection. "It is very alarming there was such a high failure rate. It really reinforces the need to carry out these kinds of joint initiatives, these car seat clinics," said Halton police Staff Sgt. Julie CraddockBijl. "This is the most precious cargo you can have in a vehicle. Some of these car seats were not even attached to the vehicle so all that would happen in a collision is that now car seat and child become a projectile." Local police, partnered with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Halton Partners for Car Seat Safety, to conduct the spot check in the Speers Road and Kerr Street area. Police said issues included: a number of nonCanadian (non-approved) car seats and expired car seats; car seats that were not attached to the vehicle; harnesses being worn under a child's arms instead of over their shoulders; and many children prematurely transitioned to booster seats who were not near the 40-pound weight limit. Having the car seat harness under a child's arms instead of over their shoulders would also do little to protect a child in the event of an accident, said Craddock-Bijl. As these failure rates are in line with other car seat spot checks done in the region, it remains concerning for police. Officers handed out no tickets and laid no charges during the clinic stating it was being held for education purposes. Inspectors did hand out seven new car seats and five new booster seats to families in need. Those who were not in need, but had expired or non-approved car seats or booster seats, were directed to purchase what they needed before their vehicle was allowed to leave the clinic. Caregivers are encouraged to review their vehicle's owner's manual and their child seat manual for correct use and installation. Residents can also contact Halton Region at 311 to find resources for proper car seat installation. WE MAKE CUSTOM FOOT ORTHOTICS!
