Motorcycles rev up for Ride for Dad Ninth annual ride kicks off at 707 Galaxy Saturday July 3rd, 11 | Friday, June 5, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The ninth annual Telus Toronto West Motorcycle Ride for Dad is set to kick off in Oakville tomorrow (Saturday). Between 200-300 motorcycle riders will leave Unifor Local 707 Galaxy Hall, 475 North Service Rd. E., at 10 a.m. to help the fight against prostate cancer through education and research. "The purpose of the motorcycle ride is to raise funds for prostate cancer research and awareness," said Rob Stanley, a local member of the organizing committee of the Toronto West Motorcycle Ride for Dad "Prostate cancer is the No. 1 cancer contracted by men and with early detection, the survival rate is very good and that is why we focus on awareness as well as research." The first Motorcycle Ride For Dad took place in Ottawa more than 13 years ago and now has grown to be held in 30 cities across Canada and in every province. To date, more than 250,000 men, women and children have been involved, raising more than $13 million to fight prostate cancer. The riders for the Toronto West event will return to Galaxy Hall after their ride for the event's awards ceremony. Net proceeds from the fundraiser go to the Prostate Cancer Fight Foundation. The funds are then used for prostate cancer research and awareness initiatives to benefit the area where the money was raised. In 2013 and 2014, the Toronto West Motorcycle Ride for Dad raised in pledges, and sponsorships and activities, $44,332 and $42,352, respectively. A portion of those funds was presented as a grant to the Credit Valley Hospital in Mississauga to support research into prostate cancer. For more information, visit http://goo.gl/0ML6hY.
