Twenty-nine students honoured by local Rotary clubs continued from p.16 The IRHS student met Messer two years ago when the school group was organizing its first spaghetti fundraiser. The networking expert Messer was fundamental in acquiring donations and other items the club needed to make its event successful, Desmarais said. To honour her memory, the Interact Club created a Donna Messer Service Above Self Scholarship at IRHS, which is an "interesting tie-in" with Rotary because the school has a great connection to it, she said. "Getting recognition for things that I've done is pretty great, but at the same time... a lot of the stuff that I've done wouldn't have been possible without Donna," said Desmarais. Selected by the school Rotary group, the $200 grant will go to a graduating IRHS student who demonstrates leadership, works in the community and promotes creativity. "This is also a great tie-in with Donna because she was such an integral part to why I would be getting this award in the first place. "Anything for her is incredible," said Desmarais. "Our entire group was really devastated to hear of her passing." The youth noted the Interact Club works at local, national and international levels to help others, attends a yearly service trip on March Break and hosts various fundraisers, including a recent school-wide event to aid earthquake victims in Nepal. "It's been really great to get involved in the Rotary family. I'm definitely going to continue on (with it) through university and for the rest of my life," said Desmarais, noting she has yet to choose a postsecondary school. "That feeling of giving yourself for others is my favourite part about volunteering, whether it's at the local pool, seniors home or in Guatemala." Logan William Townsend, 17, a Grade 12 Abbey Park High School student, was awarded one of 28 education bursaries for volunteering at the YMCA of Oakville, mentoring an eightyear-old boy with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and assisting Minor Oaks Hockey Association (MOHA) players with skating. "I am very excited to have this opportunity," said the youth, noting he was raised by his grandparents and the local YMCA was instrumental as he began to volunteer two years ago. He will be on the YMCA payroll this summer as a seasonal camp counsellor. The evening's guest speakers were sisters Emma and Julia Mogus, who founded the Oakville charity Books With No Bounds in 2011. The siblings have shipped about 78,000 books, as well as crafts, school supplies, computer tablets, clothing and other items since inception to First Nation communities and other municipalities in Canada and abroad. "It's important that we realize and appreciate how important an education is. Without education and without the knowledge that my sister and I accumulated over the years, we wouldn't be able to tell you our funny stories, our amazing experiences," said Julia.
