The Town of Oakville-hosted event honours dedicated volunteers nominated by local residents, who recognition is deserved. The awards ceremony and reception was held at the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC). "Community spirit is thriving in Oakville. Our volunteers are making a difference in their neighbourhoods, town and the broader community. This giving spirit is a big part of what makes our town so livable," said Ward 3 Town Councillor Nick Hutchins. "Sometimes it's the quietest work that has the biggest impact, so I thank you for shining a light on the efforts of your friends, neighbours, staff, coworkers and peers." Of the 29 nominees this year, seven were recognized in categories including the Access Award, Arts, Group Volunteer, Heritage, Individual Volunteer, Senior and Youth. Sponsored by Genworth Financial Canada, the Heritage Award recognizes an individual or organization that has made an outstanding contribution to Oakville by aiding in the preservation and celebration of the town's natural, built or cultural heritage. Oakville naval reserve officer and author Sean Livingston took home the accolade for his 2014 book, Oakville's Flower: The History of HMCS Oakville, a historical account of the HMCS Oakville -- a Canadian Second World War Corvette that fought in the Battle of the Atlantic.
