Wednesday March 7, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Mayor accepts challenge to dig deep " for Big Brothers Curling Bonspiel By Wilma Blokhuis BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR It appears Dan Purdy is taking M ayor Ann Mulvale out to lunch unless he increases his personal dona tion to the Big Brothers of Halton. Purdy, who for years challenged Mulvale over whose team would raise the most money in the annual Big Brothers Curling Bonspiel, decided to change his tactic, now that h e's been too busy, over the past few years, to ice a team. So, instead, Purdy decided to chal lenge the mayor to dig deep into her own pocket and top his $500 donation to the Big Brothers. She did, and gave a $550 personal cheque. "We've always been very compet itive," explains Mulvale - who admits to enjoying the challenge. "H e's challenged me personally and h e's told me if I don't give more, I would have to take him out for lunch. "Every year we would challenge each other to see which team would raise the most money, and it's always been Dan first and the mayor second," she said. "But, neither one o f us has ever won the curling bonspiel." It's always been a friendly com pe tition. "The only reason Ann beat me with her personal donation is because I told her the amount I was giving," said Purdy. Purdy's team peaked at $8,000 in fundraising, much o f it coming from his corporate supporters. "If A nn's team raises more than my best, I'll come out of retirement and have a team." Currently, the m ayor's team has $4,000 in pledges for this Saturday's bonspiel. (Because Mulvale has a outof-town commitment, her team cap tain will be Councillor Tedd Smith.) Purdy's and M ulvale's personal donations will be added to the total to be raised by the m ayor's team. Purdy, an insurance broker, is a former Big Brother and board mem ber, and fundraising volunteer. "Between Ann and Dan we would raise about half o f the money we would hope to raise at our bonspiels," said Frank M cD erm ott, bonspiel chair. To date the event has 28 registered teams, "but w e're looking for 32," M cDermott said. "We have a lot o f Little Brothers who curl and they will be playing," he added. Saturday's bonspiel, at the Oakville Curling Club, 224 Allan St., begins with registration at 8:15 a.m. The first game starts at 9 a.m., fol lowed by an official opening at 10:15 a.m. The second game starts at 10:30 a.m. Play continues to 4 p.m. The Oakville Curling is donating the use o f its rink for the day.
