www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, June 18, 2015 | 42 MS Walk helps `glue' Oakville family together after loss by Bob Mitchell Oakville Beaver Staff Health "Connected to your Community" For 15 years, Colin Moorman has been participating in the Oakville Mandarin MS (multiple sclerosis) Walk -- a fundraising event that has become a living legacy for his wife Cathy, who died from the rapidly progressing disease six years ago. Moorman and his family -- along with their friends -- once again participated in the event on May 3 and raised just more than $5,000 for the charity. People can still donate to the cause under Moorman's name online by visiting http:// goo.gl/mony1Z. "The Oakville Mandarin MS Walk has helped to glue my family together," Moorman said, reflecting on the walk and what it means to him and his family and relatives. In 2000, Cathy rode the walk in her electric wheelchair while Colin, their youngest son Stuart, then 15, and Cathy's sister Marie and her husband, John, participated in their first MS Walk. They were dubbed `The 4 Horses and a Wheelchair.' "She'd been in a wheelchair for a couple of years at the time. She had been diagnosed with progressive MS around 1998," Moorman said. "But we think she probably had the symptoms a couple of years before that. "With her type of MS, there is no treatment or drugs to take. You go rapidly downhill from there. It quickly went from her being able to walk to not being able to use one of her legs at all." Then in 2008, Cathy, then aged 58, died three weeks before she could participate in that year's walk. "The rest of us still did the walk," Moorman, 69, said. "It was tough." In the early years, the walk was always held in April and Moorman and his crew often felt like postmen -- neither rain, nor sleet, nor ice, nor snow could stop them from participating. "Even my wife rode her electric wheelchair through some awful weather," Moorman said. Why Do Oakville Families Trust Us with All Their Dental Needs? MS is a chronic, often disabling, disease of the brain and spinal cord that affects 100,000 Canadians -- the highest rate of MS in the world. It's the most common neurological disease of young adults in Canada and three Canadians are diagnosed with the illness every day. Most are diagnosed between the ages of 15-40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives.
