Numbness, tingling, impaired speech among symptoms continued from p.43 Then, at age 48, she was diagnosed with progressive MS. Like so many others, she had dismissed many of the symptoms of MS, such as the numbness in her ngers that had started years earlier before her ofcial diagnosis. Progressing rapidly, starting in her feet and legs, the MS quickly robbed her of the ability to walk. As she was losing the use of her legs, Moorman would help her to move her legs ever so slowly, one leg at a time, up the stairs of their house. "The doctors have no idea how she got it. It just shows up," Moorman said. "She had mainly problems with one of her legs, but she also lost the sight in one of her eyes. It's an incurable disease, but there are different types of MS and some can live for many, many years with treatment and drugs. My wife had the type that couldn't. It was the luck of the draw. "She was diagnosed at 48, which is very late for MS to strike. Most people are diagnosed between 20 and 40 and twice as many women as men (contract) it." Including the original `4 Horses,' there were approximately another dozen family members and friends participating in this year's event. "I know I intend to keep participating for as long as I can," Moorman said. "When you look at people who have MS, you know you have to help them any way you can. They need our support." Moorman hasn't kept track how much they've raised each year but this year was the rst time they had hit their goal of raising $5,000. "It was a good feeling," he said.
