www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 19, 2015 | 8 MADD's 24 Hours video filmed at Abbey Park High School and Kelso continued from p.1 Some of the scenes were filmed at Oakville's Abbey Park High School as well as at Kelso Conservation Area in Milton. Members of Halton and Peel regional police forces, along with paramedics from Halton and Milton firefighters, played themselves in the 45-minute production, which ends with three heart-breaking real-life stories of how an impaired driver shattered lives. With its national headquarters based in Oakville, MADD Canada has been presenting its student assembly programs since 1994. This is the 12th film that has been produced, which delivers several messages, such as the dangers of mixing alcohol and marijuana with driving, refusing to accept rides from alcohol or drugimpaired drivers, and the importance of choice and how making the right decision for yourself and your friends can save lives. Laurie McCurlie, co-owner of MJM Media and producer of the school assembly program for MADD Canada, said students' lives are changed when they watch these films. "The kids heckle at the beginning. Then they become totally engaged in the drama," McCurlie said. "Then when we get to the real victims' stories, you can hear a pin drop. So, we know we're affecting them." Research by MADD Canada and Environics Research Group after last year's school assembly program shows 80 per cent of students would likely not accept a ride from anyone who'd consumed alcohol and 87 per cent wouldn't accept a ride from someone who has used marijuana. Nearly all students agreed, there would be consequences to drinking and driving, including getting into a crash (95 per cent), being injured (94 per cent) and having police find out (94 per cent). Directed by Tom Burstyn, the film shows the fictional account of Michelle, played by Erika Ehler, Lainey, depicted by Amelia Burstyn, and Nate, played by Andrew Pimento, as they make plans and eventually attend a bush party dubbed `The End of The World.' Gathering in a restaurant before heading to the outdoor bash, Michelle and Lainey spike their soda pop with liquor and get in the mood by asking each other what they would do if they only had 24 hours to live. Nate isn't drinking as he has volunteered to be the designated driver. But when the teenage girls catch Nate smoking pot later that night, they end up catching a ride home with a boy Michelle has just met. see Heartbreaking on p.9 July 10th, 2015.
