Oakville Walk for Guide Dogs in support of training service dogs Participants in the Ride for Dog Guides will be putting two wheels on the road tomorrow (Saturday) to help out four-legged heroes. The ride, which raises funds for the Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides, is taking place in four Canadian communities along scenic routes. The Oakville ride is a 189-kilometre trip starting at the Lions Foundation headquarters, 152 Wilson St., and ending in Breslau, Ont. It is expected to draw approximately 100 motorcyclists with the goal of raising $13,000. Registration begins at 9 a.m. on the day, followed by the ride kicking off at 10 a.m. The Oakville-headquartered Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides matches Canadians with medical or physical disabilities with assistive dogs at no cost. It receives no government funding. The cost of raising, training and matching a Dog Guide with a qualifying candidate is approximately $25,000. Dog Guides are provided through six distinct programs including Canine Vision, Hearing Ear, Service, Seizure Response, Autism Assistance, and Diabetic Alert. To date, more than 2,300 Dog Guides have been placed with people across Canada.
