www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, June 19, 2015 | 4 Project 5-O targeting speeding on residential streets Drivers who feel the need for speed on residential roads better be prepared to pay. Halton police are in the midst of a week-long enforcement campaign, dubbed Project Five-O, targeting vehicles speeding on residential streets where the speed limit is 50 km/h. Staff Sergeant Julie Craddock-Bijl of Oakville's Community Mobilization Bureau said speeding along these streets is the number one traffic complaint received by police. Officers are focusing on streets where residents say drivers are simply not obeying the speed limit in hopes it will help motorists understand as speed increases, so does the risk of accident. This is particularly concerning as there is more pedestrian activity in residential areas. Vehicles travelling at high rates of speed require an increased stopping distance and have less time available for driver reaction to situations such as a child running out onto the roadway, said Craddock-Bijl. Getting caught speeding also has a steep monetary penalty. Anyone caught driving 15 km over the posted speed limit will received a fine of $52.50 and two demerit points. If caught driving 30 km over the posted speed limit, the penalty is a $220 fine and four demerit points.
