B2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday March 28, 2001 Survivor promotes Daffodil Days B y W ilm a B lo k h u is BEAVER FOCUS EDITOR Don North, `the auctioneer' at the Church of the Epiphany, was undergo ing chemotherapy for colon cancer when he first `entertained' at the church's annual spring auction two years ago. But few people were aware of his treatment. North donned hats, a pair of moose antlers, and `played' with the donated items he was selling. Last year, the auctioneer raised $5,100 cancer free. On May 26, North will again be taking bids at the Epiphany's spring auction. He had surgery to remove a tumour from his colon in early October 1997. North, who runs Gifts Etc, a novel ty giftware distribution business, agreed to be this year's `poster boy' for the Cancer Society's annual Daffodil Days this Friday and Saturday. Members of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and cancer society volun teers will be selling 10 blooms for $5 at malls and other locations throughout Oakville. Fresh daffodils will also be sold at the Oakville Unit office of the Canadian Cancer Society, 635 Fourth Line, Unit 51, tomorrow and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. North was diagnosed during his annual physical in May, 1997 - after a period of denial. "I knew there was something wrong, but I didn't say anything to my doctor (Dr. Peter Eddenden) earlier," says North. "I didn't want to know. Whenever I FI NK L I N G E R I E www.goodnightgoodmorning.com 100 BRONTE RD. UNIT #3, OAKVILLE · 847-1512 saw an ad about cancer on television, or heard one on the radio, I would turn it off. "Truth is, I never indicated (to my doctor) I had any signs of colon can cer." At the time, North was aware he was losing blood through his bowels, however, by not saying anything, it went undetected. "I now realize how dumb that was." North was lucky. The tumour was encapsulated, and Dr. Duncan Rozario, a surgeon at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH), was able to remove all of it by cutting away part of his colon and bowel. North arrived at the hospital for testing at 10 a.m. and had surgery at 9 p.m. the same day. His wife Sheila was there to greet him after waking up from the 3 172hour operation. "She had a big smile on her face." North spent five days in hospital, "and before I left on a Friday, I had the results. The doctors were cautious ly optimistic they got all of it." The surgery was followed by six months of chemotherapy "as a preven tive measure," says North. "All it takes is only one cell." While undergoing chemotherapy, North also required a colostomy reversed in April 1998 - and was taken care of at home by his wife and VON nurses who he described as "angels." Now he visits Dr. Brian Higgins at the Credit Valley Hospital's cancer clinic every six months for a check-up, anticipating the all-clear signal after five years. "Right now I'm wonderful," he says "I've had four birthdays since my cancer operation," says North, who turned 58 on March 20. He runs seven to eight kilometres, four days a week. "I like to keep fit," he says. Looking back, he realizes denial is not a cure for cancer. "When you think you're showing symptoms of cancer, you should have it looked at," he advises, adding he no longer tunes out the ads warning about the causes of cancer. `T he ad I've found most beneficial is the one that says `Cancer doesn't kill you. Fear does.'" For more information about Daffodil Days, call the Cancer Society at 905-845-5231.
