It seems the Oakville Wind Orches tra (OWO) was Oakville's best kept secret, but when the community orchestra received an invitation to the National Music Festival in Ottawa this year, the veil of secrecy was lifted. Although finances and time con straints may prevent the OWO from accepting this invitation, its members are delighted that they were asked to participate in such a prestigious event. The invitation, says OWO president Jacquie Holmberg, was a direct result o f their gold standard achievement at the recent Greater Toronto Music Festival. A ccording to Holmberg, being awarded the gold standard not only validated the orchestra's hard work and commitment, it secured national recognition for the 45-piece band. And although it is rare for a commu nity band to enter this particular music fest, which usually attracts mostly high school bands, she says the differ ent levels placed them in category almost by themselves. "They have set music for different levels. And if you attain a certain level of playing, you'll get a bronze, and if you get a higher level you get a silver. It's quite hard to get a gold...They invite the top band to the National Music Festival (in May). And, of course, because they're doing all the regional centres all across Canada, they're only picking the very top one to be invited," she explains. (S e e `M usical' on page C 3) Photos by Barrie Erskine Above, Kelly Davey concentrates on her flute music while new OWO music director, Chris Arthurs, con ducts the weekly rehearsal. Far left, the score for Shakespeare in Love can be seen through the eyes, or is it the fingers and instrument, of a practising musician. Left is one of the French horns played in the orchestra and below is one example of the sheet music that is so valuable to all OWO members.
