Wednesday, March 14, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B3 Marian Montessori holds CancerAwareness Day In memory of three women who have died of cancer, Marian Montessori School in Glen Abbey will be holding a Cancer Awareness Day on April 28. "These three women were very close to me," says Marie Silva, owner of Marian Montessori. "They were very ardent admirers of the school." One was a grandmother, and the other two were parents of children who attended Marian Montessori, established in 1990. Muriel Chin, grandmother of former pupil Melissa Chin, died of lung cancer about 10 years ago, said Silva. The other two died of breast cancer. Heather McKinley "died the day her son Patrick was to start coming to this school" in 1994, said Silva. Both of her sons, Patrick and Paul, attended Marian Montessori. And, Preethi Chander, mother of Monica and Pavan, died earlier this year on Feb. 17. "All three of them were very involved and interested in this school," said Silva. A deeply religious woman who runs a private Catholic school for children 2 to 6 following the Montessori Method, Silva said she "believes God sent me a message after the third one died, that I must do something." Hence, she has organized the Cancer Awareness Day, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with several speakers including Dr. A. Mathur of the Rebecca Medical Centre, naturopathic doctor Darlene Gustin, reg istered nurse, nutrition consultant and certified wellness educator Linda Fletcher; registered massage therapist Linda Renco; RNA and fitness consul tant Nancy Neufeld; and beauty consul tant Neera Gandhi. They will speak about their areas of expertise, including herbal medications, nutrition, relaxation techniques, mes sage therapy, cancer risks and breast self-examination. Although designed for parents and grandparents of children at the school, the Cancer Awareness Day will also be open to the public. Admission is free. Marian Montessori School is at 1265 Heritage Way. For more information, call 905-827-8125. Fat Wars author speaks Thursday Did you know even 20 pounds of extra weight increases your risk of premature death by up to 20%. And, the more extra weight you carry, the more vulnerable you become to stress and poor health, says Brad King, nutritional researcher, fitness expert and author of Fat Wars: 45 Days to Transform Your Body. The author will speak at the Oakville Holiday Inn, 590 Argus Rd., on Thursday, March 15, 7:30 p.m.; and again at Loblaw's Natural Value at 3045 Mavis Rd., Mississauga, on Friday March 16 from 7 to 9 p.m. According to King, increased fat puts you at risk for: heart disease, diabetes, gout, sleep apnea, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, hypertension (high blood pressure), breast and prostate cancer, gallbladder disorders and gallstones, joint pain and osteoarthritis. And, the list goes on... studies show that obesity also places undue strain on the immune system mak ing people more susceptible to stress, colds and flu, bacterial infections and parasites. King stresses that the focus should be on ridding the body of excess "fat" and not on "weight." Dramatic weight loss may just be dramatic muscle loss, making the average person on a diet "a smaller fat per son."
