That seems to be the consensus of nine T. A. Blakelock High School students who have been painting the set for H obson' s Choice since January. And they have to be on the job at 9 a.m. on Satur days and Sundays - quite a feat for nine teenagers. Now that the provincial government requires all students entering high school to complete 40 hours of community service before they graduate, six of these students, who must fulfill that obligation, have found something that fits the government's criteria, stimulates their creativity and is fun at the same time. Jane Coryell, the set designer and scene painting co-ordinator for the upcoming Oakville Players production, says she has "retired from schooling but not from teaching." So, she approached students from her former school to volunteer for her crew of scenery painters. Six Grade 10s stepped forward, along with three Grade 12s who don't have to do the 40 hours to graduate. And they all talk with enthusiasm about their community service job. Chantelle Kerr thinks "it's an awesome way of volunteering. I don't even think of it as volunteering. It's just fun," she said. "I'd do it for nothing." "It's a neat way to express your creative side," agreed Pamela Katzmann. Even Jamie Posen and Colin Barnett, who claim not to have an artistic gene between them, say that scene painting has been a learning experience and certainly worth the price of getting up early on weekends. But for Laura Kimlin, one of the Grade 12 stu dents, that is a definite downer. "I've always been into the arts my whole life and it's always been something that I've been good at," she said. "The only thing is: I don't like getting picked up at 8:30 in the m orning.. .1 take a nap on the way there." Karla Corrigan, who is involved in visual and performing arts, says scene painting has provided her with another way to meet like-minded people. The set that this enthusiastic group of students is painting is one that revolves to reveal three differ ent scene locations in 1880s Salford, England, with 15 to 20 flats that have to be painted. Some of the more intricate work involves the creation of bricks, a paper-mache sink, and stencil work. "I made designs for stencils and the kids cut them. Then we used sponges to turn huge four-feet ' by eight-feet panels into Persian carpets...They are (See `Seeing' on page C3) . P r e s e n t s ....
