Wednesday, March 14, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C3 Seeing end result is `really satisfying' (Continued from page C1) going to lay on the floor of the stage because the stage floor is black and boring to look at," explained Coryell, noting that all her scene painters will get complimentary tickets to see the show. And that's one of the bonuses of the job for Grade 12 volunteer Carrie McCamey. "The stuff you learn is inter esting and you can apply it other places as well. But to be able to go and see the work you've done on the stage is really satisfying," she said. Alison Preece, another Grade 12er and someone who is involved in theatre as an actor, says this is her third year doing scene painting. "It looks good on my resume to see that I've been involved in other areas of theatre," she said. "It's a really good experience." All the student volunteers readily admit that they'll do it again if the opportunity arises, especially if it involves paper-mache again, when they can "get down and dirty." In fact, Katzmann described the whole experience as a "wacky, easy-going, less structured" type of art. Perhaps, that's because Coryell enjoys working with young people and is confident in their ability to follow instructions, even in the cramped little space they have called home on weekend mornings for almost two months. "One of the reasons I like to work with kids is because it is fun to work with kids. It also gives me a chance to do a little bit of sneaky teaching about scene painting tech niques and art stuff," she said. "And I'm addicted to teaching, although I left the classroom...Teenagers are a real pleasure to spend the morning with. They're not get ting marked, but they're still being creative." Like McCamey, Coryell also enjoys seeing the finished product on stage, "under the lights." And one of the best ways to get to that finished product quickly is to have a large, enthusiastic scene painting team. Hence, the students. "The people I have found best to work on big scene painting teams are students," said Coryell. "The really devoted people are the ones who actually get up early enough in the morning to come and scene paint." Perhaps the students' zeal is a reflection o f the infec tious enthusiasm of their teacher, who believes that her charges are not only learning about art and theatre as they help create the set, but are learning co-operation, problem solving and social responsibility. "It's bigger than fun," she exclaimed. H obson' s Choice, a comedy about a shoemaker in Vic torian England whose daughters prove that he should never underestimate the power of a determined woman, will be on stage at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, March 22 to 24 and March 28 to 31. New You For Spri Photos by Riziero Vertolli Above, Sam Joyce continues sketching on the "Persian carpet" that will brighten up the stage floor for H ob son 's Choice, while busy hands, right, put a few finish ing touches on some of the furnishings.
