Sunday March 18, 2001 Oakville Beaver Weekend 13 Sheridan College students in the big leagues Sports Injury Management student gets to rub shoulders with Toronto Raptors By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Jerome Camacho has hit the big leagues with the Toronto Raptors. The third-year Sheridan College Sports Injury Management student has been sitting on the sidelines this year. "It's like season's tickets," joked the 26year-old. His humour belies his career commit ment, but probably helped him gain an inside track with the Toronto basketball team and its big stars. Since the beginning of the season, Camacho has been working as an intern with the Raptors as the recipient of the annual Toronto Raptors Scholarship. He officially picked up the scholarship from team management at centre court before the tip off of the Raptors/New Jersey Nets game at the Air Canada Centre on March 2. The scholarship carried $3,000 toward his $2,700 annual tuition, but more importantly it enabled him to work this season alongside Raptors' athletic therapist Chuck Mooney, also a Sheridan graduate. "I'll stay with the'team until the play-offs are over. Play-offs start April 21," said Camacho. The Mississauga resident earned a bache lor's degree in physical education from Brock University before going to Sheridan. Camacho has continued his studies while working at Raptors practices, home games and in the team clinic. Meanwhile, second-year student John Sage has picked up a similar scholarship with the Toronto Blue Jays. Sage began work at spring training camp with Blue Jays' athletic therapist Scott Shannon, another graduate of Sheridan's 30year-old program -- the first accredited ath letic therapy program in Canada. "Many of our graduates work with profes sional teams," said Joe Rotella, co-ordinator of the program that's been part of the Olympics, Para-Olympics, Commonwealth Games and Canada Games. "This has been different than everything," said Camacho, noting much of it takes per sonality. "If you don't gain the trust of the athletes, you're done," he said. Camacho had to melt a lot of ice to gain the trust of both his boss and the superstars like Vince Carter. "It's difficult because everybody wants to be their friend. People latch onto the whole celebrity thing. People ask me if I party with them, but that's not my focus," said Camacho. "I really expected the worst, but they've all been really nice. They all say `hi'. I knew I had to step up, they don't have to go to my level. It's a trust and confidence thing. As a student intern, I had to break down the barri er," said Camacho before he could, "get my hands on" star athletes like Carter or Alvin Williams. Basketball is a highly demanding sport. Yet at day's end, Camacho said, "It's an entertainment business, that's all. The play ers have to produce and fill the seats. "One day they're there, the next they're gone. That's the cold side of the business," he said. Camacho's internship began last October when he took off to Buffalo for eight days at training camp. Now that his own season with the Raptors is wrapping up, Camacho makes no bones about wanting a job. Sheridan graduates can be found working for major league sports teams like the Toronto Maple Leafs, Hamilton Tiger Cats, Toronto Argos, Vancouver Grizzlies, Vancouver Canucks, Minnesota Wild and the Toronto Rock (lacrosse).
