SHERIN Oakville Town council attempted to ease resident concerns -- about a youth centre moving from Cross Avenue to 1131 Nottinghill Gate -- by providing more information about the facility. Councillors voted unanimously Monday to approve a lease agreement, which will see the Oakville Youth Centre move from 177 Cross Ave. to Nottinghill Gate. The 1,500-square-foot centre, operated by the Town, opened on Cross Avenue in 2001 and features a large open multi-use area, a computer lab, small kitchen and staff office. The centre's impending move to Ward 4 has created some concern among local residents. "I had a number of phone calls. People don't know exactly what is involved with the youth centre," said Ward 4 Town and Regional Councillor Allan Elgar. "They don't know who is in charge there or if it is just a bunch of kids who go there and do whatever they want. They also want to know the hours of operation." Elgar said members of the public also wanted to know why there was no public information meeting about the moving of the youth centre. Commissioner of Community Services Colleen Bell said the Oakville Youth Centre would be open Wednesdays and Thursday from 3-8 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 3-10 p.m. The centre is for children aged 12 and up. Bell said the centre would not be self-administered by the youths who attend and there would always be Town staff supervision in place. "We do a variety of programming that allows youth to develop skills, build positive social skills with other youth, and feel a sense of belonging," said Bell. "We would like to hold information sessions with the neighbours and certainly in this case we would like the neighbours to know and understand exactly what the youth centre will do and the benefits of it, not just for youth in the area, but the community." No dates have been set for upcoming information sessions. While he is seeking additional information, Elgar made it clear he supports the youth centre in his ward. "I'm not saying this is a bad idea. It is a good idea," he said. "There are so many children that are not involved in organized sports and they need a place to go, too. So, I think this will be really good for the community, but it really is important that we communicate to the community also because the first time many of them heard about it was when the Beaver arrived on their doorsteps over the weekend." Oakville Mayor Rob Burton echoed Elgar's sentiments noting there is also a successful youth centre in Bronte. "I remember very well the fear, uncertainty and doubt in Bronte when the youth centre was announced. People thought the end of the Earth was going to happen. There were going to be vandals and rack and ruin," said Burton. "It has been the exact opposite. It is keeping kids out of trouble and giving kids a place to go instead of falling into bad company. It has been every parent's best wish." Town staff previously stated the youth centre that is located across the street from the Oakville GO Station is moving because it has seen a drop in attendance over the past two years, which staff attribute to a demographic shift in the neighbourhood. The facility's lease also expires Nov. 30 and the property owner wants to redevelop the site. Town staff said the Nottinghill Gate location was chosen because it offers a 2,400-squarefoot facility, which is positioned close to a large residential area, three elementary schools, two high schools and a public transportation route.
