The campaign runs throughout July and August and is intended to raise awareness among the public about the importance of blood donations, particularly during the summer. "During summer it is a historically quieter time for blood donations," said Michael Betel, director of Donor Relations for Blood Services Canada South Central Ontario. "People go away on vacations and people travel and this is not really top of mind, so this is a fun way to encourage people to stand sideby-side with the first responders." Betel said while donations may drop during the summer, the need for blood donations does not. A single car accident victim, he noted, can require 50 units of blood. The Sirens for Life kick-off saw Halton police officers, Halton EMS, St. John Ambulance paramedics and Burlington firefighters roll up their sleeves and donate 14 units of blood. As of last Friday (June 26), Halton police were in the lead with eight units donated. Betel pointed out Halton police trounced the other services in the local competition last year. The Sirens for Life campaign in Halton has a goal of collecting 150 units of donated blood by the end of the summer. Across Canada, the Sirens for Life campaign aims at raising 3,000 units. The campaign fell short of its goal last year with approximately 2,500 units donated. Betel said there is currently a great need for O-negative blood as Canadian Blood Services has less than a three-day supply available. Ideally, he said, there should be a five-toeight-day supply on-hand. Known as the `universal' blood type, O-negative can be transfused into almost any patient in need. Because of that, Canadian Blood Services is calling on anyone with that blood type to donate. "They use a lot of it and that is the one we are short on," said Betel. "We'll have you in and out in about an hour and you could save a life," said Betel. He also pointed out, as of July 10, the Canadian Blood Services Burlington clinic at 1250 Brant St. is open Fridays from 8 a.m. to noon.
