Loved and devoted husband to Audrey (nee Mondey), he died suddenly but peacefully at the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. His mind was settled and knew much love was always with him. Born and raised in Montreal to Ina and Ernest Archibald, Dick was the "little big" brother to Ruth Booth (Lorne) and Betty Mitchell (William). He attended West Hill High School and later MacDonald College of McGill University. It was there he joined every school athletic team, and honed his social skills which gave him an opening to meet the beautiful cheerleader and school athlete Audrey. Fortunately, he was still able to excel and graduate in chemistry with a BSc in Agriculture. Audrey and Dick were married in 1954 and began their family in Montreal, moved to Toronto and finally settled in Oakville in 1960. They joined St. Paul's United Church and became active volunteers within. Co-Presidents of the Social Committee was a position created either for them or by them. The Oakville Club, Wallace Park Tennis Club, Oakville Golf Club and Mississauga Golf and Country Club were all places where many friendships began. Stange-Pemberton Ltd. of Toronto was the beginning of Dick's accomplished career in the food science industry. It was said by many that he added his "spice" to the spice industry. Semmons Taylor Co was his next move where he was instrumental in opening the factory and lab in the UK. Travelling overseas for the business gave him the opportunity to explore more of the world and Audrey was then able to join him. When semi retirement came, they took extensive trips with friends visiting almost every continent. Dick ensured his children and grandchildren would embrace the Canadian winters and the family joined the Oakville Figure Skating Club and later Valley Schuss Ski Club in the Hockley Valley. Again the social activities were what kept Audrey and Dick driving back and forth 2 days every weekend until the last snow drift melted. Who ever thought of dancing after a day of skiing? He will be greatly missed by his children, Cheryl Phillips (Stephen), Pamela Archibald (Robert Boggs) and Rick Archibald (Nancy Truman). He will always be the adored Pop Pop to grandchildren Ellen and Margot Phillips, James and Megan Boggs and Julia and Delaney Archibald. Dick's story is truly a love story with Audrey, his family, his friends and of life. His presence will be greatly missed in the room. In accordance with Dick's wishes, there will be no service, however, friends and family are invited to visit at Ward Funeral Home, 109 Reynolds Street, Oakville, on July 9, 2015, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A private family interment will follow at a later date. Those who wish may consider a donation to the Oakville Hospital Foundation in memory of Richard Archibald.
