www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, July 10, 2015 | 22 Ecologist is a researcher by day and poet by hobby `I think they are both parts of the same world' -- Dr. Madhur Anand I think they are both parts of the same world. I think there's a lot to be gleaned from the language and concepts of science that are constantly evolving in terms of metaphor and just different forms of expression. When combined, I think we can get to truths about human nature and our place in the world that perhaps we can't by only considering one or the other. Dr. Madhur Anand poet and ecologist continued from p.19 because a lot of it is online or in library magazines or books. I am addicted to reading poetry," she said. Anand, former Canada Research Chair in Global Ecological Change at the University of Guelph, writes whenever she has a free moment, and says after years of writing and participating in workshops and writing programs, she had enough poetry to consider a book. "I would say it was difficult to get published in that I did start trying to publish my book a few years ago and failed. But, in hindsight, I am glad that it took so long because my writing continued to improve, gradually but then, dramatically," Anand said. "It is certainly improbable to publish a book of poetry with one of the few Canadian publishers of poetry. Someone once told me it was impossible for me to do it. Difficult, yes, but not impossible." The Toronto Star, Winnipeg Free Press and the CBC all included Anand's book on their list of must reads for Canadian Poetry Month in April. The Winnipeg Free Press said, "Anand's impressive, engrossing debut indexes our modern catastrophes with scientific accuracy and poetic playfulness." The CBC called it "a striking, yet meditative, collection." As an ecologist, Anand works on the effects of human activities on ecosystems at local, regional and global scales, mainly in forest ecosystems. She uses math, statistics and computer science in her work. Anand admits many people might not see the connection between science and poetry. "I think they are both parts of the same world.
