An 18-year-old Oakville resident has been named one of the finalists of the annual Google Science Fair. Calvin Rieder is one of two Canadians among the 90 finalists from the thousands of students aged 13-18, who submitted projects from more than 90 countries. The St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School graduate developed atmospheric water condensers to extract drinking water from the air for his Calvin Rieder one of two Canadian finalists in Google Sceince Fair project, Passive Dual Purpose Condenser to Provide Potable Water. The other Canadian finalist, Isabella O'Brien, 13, of Dundas, Ont., also made the shortlist with her project that explores the use of shell waste to stabilize ocean pH levels and in turn preserve coral and shelled life in her project Trouble in Paradise: Can shell recycling help buffer the effects of ocean acidification?. The top 20 finalists will be named on Aug. 4 The Google Science Fair is the largest online science fair in the world, offering students the opportunity to pursue their interest in STEM education. Based on the notion it takes one idea to change the world, the Google Science Fair enables students from around the world to share their ideas with the science community. Canadian students have won top honours at the Google Science Fair in recent years. In 2013, Ann Makosinski of Victoria, B.C. took home the grand prize in her age group for inventing a flashlight powered by the heat of the human hand.
