In-patient tower named for Gilgan who donated $10M continued from p.8 have named other areas of importance to them. These legacies are an important part of OTMH history." However, HHS officials confirmed this week the new hospital will still be named the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. The OTMH name stems from a decision taken in 1943 to honour the servicemen and servicewomen from the Oakville area in naming Oakville' s hospital. It also incorporated Oakville and "Trafalgar" in OTMH, a reference to the Township of Trafalgar, which joined with the Town of Oakville to become the Town of Oakville. Both municipalities provided funding for the original hospital facility. "We are poised to open the new OTMH in December of this year. This will be the second facility to bear the historic name of OTMH," said Denise Hardenne, HHS president and CEO. "For more than 65 years, this name has stood as a living memorial to those who served in the Second World War and gave their lives for freedom. The name has also become synonymous with patient care excellence in Oakville and it will continue to do so. "The Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital name is clearly depicted on all main entrances, as well as on the pylon signs on the grounds. We could not have accomplished this without the generous support of the many thousands of donors, not only in the past several years, but also throughout the history of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital and Halton Healthcare." Oakville Mayor Rob Burton said an OTMH sign can clearly be seen at both the east and west entrances to the new hospital. "It's really big, way bigger than the name of any donor on any piece of the hospital," he said. "I'm confident that council, as their largest donor of all the donors, is content with the way things are being done." The Town of Oakville plans to contribute a local share of $130 million towards the new Oakville hospital. Construction of the new facility is expected to reach substantial completion in August with an anticipated move-in date later this year. The hospital, which will have a capacity for 457 inpatient beds and offer a full range of acute health care services, will officially open in December. 11 | Thursday, July 23, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com You can...
