Thieves strike numerous Kerr Street shops in series of smash-and-grabs by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 3 | Thursday, July 23, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton police are investigating multiple breakins to stores on Kerr Street, which occurred early Monday, and saw $10,000 in cigarettes stolen from the Kerr Street Canadian Tire Gas Bar. At 4:25 a.m., the alarm at the 1080 Kerr St., Canadian Tire sounded after suspects smashed the business' front window, police said. Two intruders, wearing face masks and gloves, loaded cigarettes into a waiting U-Haul before making their escape. Police said this theft appears unrelated to a se- ries of smash-and-grab style break-ins that took place on Kerr Street during the same period. Keith Dawes, owner of the music business Recordings, said police arrived on his doorstep at 8 a.m. to inform him that his 112 Kerr St. business had been broken into. "They told me to look around and see if anything was missing. We leave our cash register open with nothing in it, but I'm not sure if any of our products were stolen," said Dawes. "We're not a big box store or anything so it's like a personal attack because you do take it personally. It is more upsetting when they take money or expensive, important products." Dawes said it appears someone used a brick to smash the glass front door to break in. He wasn't the only victim. Police confirmed the alarm at Chocolate Alphabet and Casa Del Gelato, 110 Kerr St., sounded at 4:42 a.m. when someone smashed a side glass door to steal $100 from a cash drawer. At about the same time, the nearby Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurant at 579 Kerr St., had its front glass door smashed with a rock, but nothing was taken. The suspects also broke into Renees Roti at 579 Kerr St., smashing the front glass door with a rock, police said. They stole an empty cash reg- ister and were caught on video surveillance. The first is described as a white male, in his late 20s or early 30s with a thin build. He wore a red, hooded sweater, baggy denim capri pants, black running shoes with white stripes and a black fedora with a white rim. A second man stood outside during the Renees Roti break-in. He is described as black with a thin build. He wore a black, hooded sweater, with white writing on the front, beige cargo shorts and black sneakers.
