Charlie Violin heading to China on trade mission by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver 13 | Friday, July 24, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com An Oakville high school student will be on a mission to become a global citizen when he heads to China next month. Charlie Violin, a 15-year-old at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, will join 40 of Canada's top youth leaders on a trade mission to China July 30-Aug. 15. Violin and other participants were selected from hundreds of candidates, who were a part of Global Vision's national recruitment and outreach campaign. Founded in 1991, Global Vision is a notfor-profit charitable organization providing Canadians aged 16-25 hands-on international experience representing national culture and industry abroad through its Junior Team Canada (JTC) program. "I feel like I'm there to learn more about the world, the global market and how it's expanding and changing. It's about getting to know your home more and having a view of the whole world," said Violin. The St. Thomas Aquinas student has been involved with Global Vision since his selection to the JTC mission in April. Violin has visited the National Youth Ambassador Caucus in Ottawa as part of his role with the charitable organization. "I was so surprised because I was the youngest person at the caucus in Ottawa. Now I'm the youngest person going on the mission this year. That's something I'm really proud of," said Violin. "They (Global Vision) were really impressed with my skills for how young I was. They had extra space on the trade mission this year and they invited me to come." As JTC ambassador, Violin will travel to Chongqing, Chengdu and Guangzhou to support Canada's Global Markets Action Plan. The mission will focus on building connections between Canadian and Chinese business, government, community and cultural organizations, while targeting industries such as agriculture, education, environmental technology, tourism, manufacturing, mining and natural resources.
