This according to an annual Statistics Canada report released Wednesday (July 22). Compared to the past In 2014, Halton also saw its lowest crime rate since its regionalization in 1974, having experienced a 7.9 per cent decline last year. Statistics Canada introduced the crime severity index in 2009 as a measure of severity of crimes committed in Canada. Crimes are assigned `seriousness weights' which are determined by the number of people convicted of the crime who spend time in jail and how much time those individuals serve. Crime severity index To calculate the crime severity index, the number of incidents for each offence is multiplied by the weight of that offence. "While we have further reduced crime, to the lowest level since 1974, we have also continued to further increase our clearance rates of crimes across the region," said Halton Police Chief Stephen Tanner, reacting to the report's findings. "Our vision is to be the leader in community safety and policing excellence and by working closely with those we serve, we have continued to be just that," Tanner said. Crime severity index Halton Region has the 15th lowest index of all the 303 reporting municipalities with a population in excess of 10,000, as well as the 19th lowest violent crime severity index of those 303 municipalities and the 15th lowest non-violent crime severity index, noted the Halton Regional Police in a release on the report's findings.
