continued from p.14 TrashNothing.com. Keeping the snack pouches out of landfills is part of a nation-wide contest run by TerraCycle (TerraCycle) called the Snack Pouch Brigade (Snack PouchBrigade). The idea is to divert as many empty snack pouches and baby food pouches from landfill as possible. If Sheridan wins the snack pouch/baby food pouch contest, they'll get a $50 GoGo squeeZ prize pack along with bonus points that they can redeem as a cash donation to their school to fund new programs, textbooks and more Though this particular contest ends on July 30, Matthews said students just like the idea of recycling. So while winning the contest would be great, it's not the reason everybody has bought into the program. "It's not about winning a prize. It's about keeping stuff out of landfills,' Matthews said. "We talk about this every week. "In fact, the whole community has become involved because Sheridan has become a community drop-off place for recycling." Based on weight, TerraCycle provides schools participating in the program with a cheque twice a year, Matthews said. "We use the money for technology for our school. We've bought Ipads and Smart Boards, stuff like that," Matthews said. "We get approximately one cent per piece. Snack Pouch Brigade means business at Sheridan P .S. And we've received $3,000 over the last three years and saved more than 250,000 pieces of garbage from the landfills." To help the students in their recycling and fundraising efforts, residents can drop off their used snack pouches and baby food pouches at the school between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. next Thursday (July 30). There will also be another community collection of various non-recyclable products at the end of August. Last year, Sheridan also became a drop-off depot for used Tasimo coffee pouches. "The community around the school knows this so residents have been dropping them off as well," Matthews said. The school has drop-off times twice a week during the school year on Mondays and Fridays, Matthews said. "The bins are put at the front of the school for the students and for the community," she said. When a bin becomes full, Matthews takes it to her Oakville home and stores it in her garage. "I bring it to my house every Monday and Friday and TerraCycle has a minimum so I have to store it in my garage until we have the right amount," Matthews said. " "It depends on which brigade we are saving for. You have to collect a minimum of 1,500 Tasimo discs before they can be shipped out so you can image the humongous amount of discs I have in our garage right now." ··· Every April, the school also holds its own contest where the top recycling students earn prizes, Matthews said. "We've adopted animals from the Canadian Wildlife Federation for the kids, we've given them solar-powered and recycling toys," Matthews said. Snack pouches, which are made from flexible 19 | Friday, July 24, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com plastic fused together with aluminum, are technically recyclable. However, the high cost of separating these mixed materials means the infrastructure to do so simply isn't available across the country and therefore local municipalities won't accept these items in curbside recycling pickup, TerraCycle officials said. As a result, the materials needlessly end up in landfills sites. Our delicious & authentic Mexican food and salsas are always fresh!
