"I think we are heading for a messy strike or work-to-rule campaign that will hurt student success and hurt families financially," said Oakville trustee Paul Marai. In a motion, passed by the board at a special meeting Tuesday night, Marai urged the HCDSB to write a letter urging all parties to return to the bargaining table. "I feel it was incumbent on us to highlight the gathering storm in Ontario education," said Marai. "I, like many around this table, have been spending my June and July speaking to many concerned neighbours, friends and family." The only board still in negotiations is the French-language school board. "We're halfway through the summer and negotiations are not occurring," said Marai. Talks between OECTA and the government broke down two weeks ago despite the involvement of a conciliator and no further talks have been scheduled, said Keith Boyd, president of OECTA's Halton secondary school teachers in a recent interview. Catholic teachers have been without a contract for a year and they will be in a legal strike position as of Aug. 17.
