Main objective is to make students feel comfortable when they're in school continued from pg. 8 different forms. For her, it was more like feeling as an outcast and being left out because she didn't belong to certain clique. "Girl-on-girl bullying happens every day and often those doing the bullying don't even realize they're a bully," Chan said. "There are harsh emails and texts. A lot of it is behind closed doors. Girls say things behind another girl's back and it's often hurtful." The main thing is to make everybody feel more comfortable, all the time, while they're in school, Ostapovych said. "We want to stop girl-on-girl bullying altogether and make the transition from Grade 8 to high school a lot smoother," she explained. "It starts with rumours and gossip. It's like a game of broken telephone. One person says something to another. It might not even be true, but it comes around full circle." This transition was much easier for them because when they entered high school, Garth Webb was brand new and only had Grades 9 and 10 students. But Grade 12 is being added next year, so all the new Grade 9s will be entering a full high school. "The social hierarchy will be here," Ostapovych said. "There's no doubt the Grade 12s will be intimidating for the Grade 9s. They will be meeting a whole new bunch of new people. They were the oldest kids in their school and suddenly they're the youngest. "But at least the girls, who came to our event know us, so they'll see a friendly face in the halls." 9 | Friday, July 31, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Save your time and money and let us do it for you!
