Treatment was intense, but family held on and wants to help others continued from p.3 So far, they've raised $7,000, but they are looking for additional sponsors (bit.ly/1HtvUXy), including corporate sponsors, said Marwick, who works for the Alcohol and Gaming Commission. Several of his colleagues from work are also running. One of their neighbours is connected with Flaman Fitness in Burlington, which is donating a $5,000 matching sponsorship. "As soon as she was diagnosed, our neighbours rallied together and have been a great support to us," said Miller, who lived at SickKids for the first six weeks. "Everybody on the street bonded and one of our neighbours told us about this run so we decided we wanted to help raise funds for oncology research at the hospital. "It's a good cause. It's where Sydney goes for treatment. The whole situation is awful, but we're doing something positive to help other families with children diagnosed with cancer." When Sydney got sick, she had a cough and a limp. Her parents took her to a clinic where she was diagnosed with having a cold or bronchitis. But when she developed spots around her ears and neck they decided to seek a second opinion at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. "Fortunately, the pediatrician on duty was on the ball," Marwick said. "They did tests and told us to get right to SickKids." "The treatment was really intense that first month, but the idea is to catch it soon enough that they can wipe all the cancer away," Miller said. Sydney spent last Christmas in the hospital, but the family learned she was in remission on Dec. 23. "It was the best Christmas present we could ask for," Miller said. "She gets to spend this Christmas at home. She's already talking about decorating the Christmas tree and building a snowman." Now, Sydney gets treatment every 10-14 days and the family is hoping doctors will soon give them the news that her hospital visits can be reduced to once a month. She still has another two years of treatment ahead of her. "She was so little when she was diagnosed but now she understands why she needs to go to the hospital and how the doctors are going to make her better with their medicine," Miller said. "It was a bit of a whirlwind and I guess you could say we were lucky because we caught in early enough," Marwick said. "It was definitely a very hard period. The treatment was so intense, all we could do for her was hold her and carry her." There are 14 different legs in the run. The event starts at 7:30 a.m. at Albion Hills Conservation Area with the final 6.8-km leg ending at Cranberry Village in Blue Mountain. "The plan is for me to run that last leg," Miller said. "And then have the rest of our team join me for the last half." Marwick said 90 per cent of their team will be "struggling" throughout the run. "But they will be motivated," said Marwick, who along with his wife has been training on their treadmill. The family will also hold a garage sale at their home at 2228 Stone Glen Crescent on Aug. 22 with all proceeds going towards the run.
