www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, August 14, 2015 | 8 Proud mom thanks Oakville community for helping guide a bright future This past week I had the pleasure of watching my son participate in the 2015 Ontario Little League Provincial Championship game for 10 year olds and under in Brockville. As I peered through the fence and saw him out on the grass in his blue-and-white Oakville Whitecaps uniform, I recalled the saying "It takes a village to raise a child...". I could hear the shouts behind me from other parents, `Wait for your pitch!' `You've got this!' `Have fun out there!' Yes, this is our village. Our Oakvillage. Years of parents, coaches and volunteers supporting David through Little League baseball -- house league and Whitecaps. More months and more community participants, in our local arenas playing hockey for Minor Oakville Hockey Association (MOHA) were always combined with town activities, school activities and an education system that can't be topped (thanks to all those incredible teachers at West Oak Public School and Abbey Park High School.) The systems and roads/ pathways are part of every village and every child's development. We know our neighbours. He tricked-ortreated through our neighbourhoods with friends he grew up with and played street hockey with, and rode his bike with, through the many Oakville trails. We live in a beautiful village. But this week was different. My son wasn't one of the 10 year olds out there playing baseball. He was a 19-year-old assistant coach for the team. He stood next to first base and encouraged the boys to play their best. How did he get there? It was the village. Thank you: Brian, Derek, April, (the parents and coaches who challenged David with this incredible opportunity and learning experience), the people who gave him part-time and full-time summer employment while he is in university (and then gave him the week off to help coach this team). Thank you for the trails he rides his bike on, the public swimming pools where he learned to swim. Thank you to Peter who taught him to umpire. The MOHA organization that awarded him their first-ever scholarship. To all the people in our village because you helped, you encouraged and you permitted my son to grow with our community and inspired to give back... and I think that is what every community, every village hopes for their young. You raise a child to grow and move forward and hope that eventually they reach out and give back. This week I watched a young man give back to our village and I just want to say... to our village, Thank you Oakville.
