Burlington woman among eight in Tim Hortons' Doughdown by Kathy Yanchus Metroland West Media 13 | Friday, August 14, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Burlington resident Kirsten Brown visited Tim Hortons head office Wednesday afternoon to sell her own doughnut to the company. The 18 year old, at the company's Innovation Centre, presented her doughnut to a panel of celebrity judges as one of eight finalists in Tim Hortons' Duelling Donuts contest. It was a long way from the days when Brown fell ill after writing her final exams at McMaster University, took to surfing the Internet, clicked on the link for the competition and entered her single donut idea -- Jam Session. Jam Session inspired by family As the theme of this year's contest was familyinspired recipes, Brown's doughnut creation was borne of a long-standing love of strawberry and rhubarb. Her creation was inspired by her grandparents, Bill and Helene Feldner of Burlington, who instilled in her a love of putting strawberry rhubarb jam on toast and strawberry rhubarb in pies. "Growing up in Burlington, my grandfather had both strawberry and rhubarb bushes in his backyard. My grandparents' love of strawberry rhubarb was passed down to me, in the way of slices of pie on summer evenings and spread on toast before catching the school bus," said Brown. The contest's celebrity panel -- performers Jann Arden, deadmau5 and Sophie TweedSimmons -- will narrow the field of eight to four finalists and on Aug. 19, Tim Hortons will open up the polls to the public to ask Canadians to decide which two doughnuts they want to have the opportunity to taste in Tim Hortons restaurants. The finalists will be announced on Sept. 1 and will be sold in Tim Hortons across Canada in early 2016. The creator of the doughnut that proves most popular among Tim Hortons customers will win the contest's $10,000 grand prize. Life is complicated. We help make things a little easier.
