Friday. March 23, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Tow nm ayopt for cheapersolution toBronte Harixnirw oodproblem By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF There's lots o f wood out in Bronte Harbour and the Town of Oakville wants to do some thing about it. However, it looks like the Town will opt for a $100 sign warning boaters as opposed to the estimated $60,000 it would take to hire tugboats to haul out the wood. "We'll place the sign where it has the best visibility for boaters exiting the harbour," said Chris Mark, assistant oper ations director for the Town's Parks and Recreation depart ment. At T uesday's Com m unity Services Committee meeting, M ark admitted the Town did look into whether dumping was responsible for the large amount o f dead wood on the ice surface in the harbour. But after consulting the Harbourmaster and the Halton Conservation Authority, it was determined to be a naturally occurring phenom enon -- exacerbated this year because of consistently freezing temper atures. "It happens from time to time," said Mark. "The reason the amount of debris appears substantial is that significant ice has dammed the wood for the last few months," stated Harbourmaster Rob Mackay in a report to councillors. The wood accumulated in the har bour and northward into the 12-Mile Creek. The Town did use tugboats to break up the ice dam and as spring contin ues, the wood is expected to make its way out into Lake Ontario where most o f it should sink. M eanw hile, the w arning sign should go up in early May, in time for the start of the boating season, and in an effort to warn boaters of the poten tial for floating debris to cause naviga tional hazards.
