A day of driving and the spot has grown into a small puddle. What is it? Here's how to identify leaks from the puddles a vehicle might leave on the ground. Much of identifying leaks has to do with the color of the fluid, which is difficult to identify on black asphalt. Put some clear plastic under the area of the leak to catch what's coming out. It's important to note that most leaks come from gaskets or seals that have become old and brittle. Many are inexpensive to have repaired. Pre-trip check list Cooling System: Coolant at proper level and clean; pressure cap, thermostat and hoses in good condi tion. Connections tight. Drive Belts: Check condition and adjustments. Battery: Check fluid, where applicable. Inspect terminals. Engine: As a preventative mea sure, invest in a diagnostic check of electrical, ignition, fuel and emis sion control systems. Have needed services, including tune-up, per formed. Lubricants: Check all fluids. Change engine oil and filter, trans mission fluid and filter, as needed. Lubricate chassis where applicable. Engine oil Oil is used to cool and lubricate internal engine components. Oil, depending on the last time it was changed, will appear as a slippery dark brown semitransparent liquid (clean), to a black, sludgy liquid (dirty). W hat do you do? Small leaks are not usually fatal to the engine, although they should be fixed as oil is harmful to the environment. If you have a leak, it is important to monitor the oil level in the .engine. More than a few drops is sign of a seal failure and should be addressed. Transmission fluid Transmission fluid is a hydraulic liquid that's essential to its function. Puddles will appear reddish unless the fluid is very old and/or has overheated, in which case it will appear blackened with the distinct odor of an electrical fire. What do you do? Keep the fluid topped up until you can get your car to transmission shop. Unlike the engine, there are only a few gaskets (the fluid pan is the largest) where the leak could be coming from, so if it's not that, the problem could be major -- and expensive. The mixture is essential to the cooling operation of the engine. As the coolant level drops due to leaks, there is a higher chance of the vehicle suddenly overheating. W hat do you do? Coolant usually appears green with large puddles indicating urgent repair. It's important to clean up all leaks, but coolant perhaps more so because pets like to drink it -- to the point where it can kill them. A coolant leak can come from almost anywhere under the hood, from a decaying gasket to a failing water pump. Have coolant leaks checked out right away. W hat do you do? Actually, no water is used in the operation of the automobile. If you have air conditioning, though, excess condensation will drip onto the ground, which is normal. · N o H a s s le N o H a g g le B u y in g E x p e rie n c e · D e n t- R e s is ta n t P o ly m e r P a n e ls · 3 y r ./6 0 ,0 0 0 k m W a r r a n ty · 5 y r . / 1 0 0 ,0 0 0 k m P o w e rtr a in W a r r a n ty The m id s iz e 2 0 0 1 L I 0 0 S edan finance rate $20,960 M S R P 1.9% $ 236 rrw. / I48 mod. 2.9% lease rate $2,800 dow npaym ent COPYRIGHT WHEELBASE COMMUNICATIONS SATW N.
