The bantams' victory was particularly sweet, not only because the Warriors had defeated Oakville 7-4 Friday in round-robin play, but because Whitby had broken the Hawks' hearts two years earlier by rallying from a late deficit to defeat Oakville in the provincial peewee final. "The (round-robin) loss was hard to take. We had beaten them twice during the regular season and seemed to have their number, but they came in hungry and put it to us in that first game," said Cordingley, whose team was ranked first in Ontario the entire season. "It was something our kids learned from, a blessing in disguise. From that point on, we played the way we can play." "The kids have bought into the team concept where we don't care who scores or who makes the saves or the big plays. It's just all about us and we do it by committee," he said. "We've come close before, and it's so hard to win (provincials). They've finally been rewarded for their buying-in of the team concept." In the bantam Hawks' other games at the Final 6 provincial championships, they defeated Halton Hills 5-1, Mimico 6-4, Centre Wellington 8-2 and Guelph 4-2. Members of the team are Michael Hodowany, Alton McDermott, Ryan O'Hara, Ben Doherty, Jonathan Gagliardi, Jack Follows, Zander Alsace, Justin Sykes, Curtis Goddard, Matthew Wright, Chris Dong, Jack Travassos, Aden Walsh, Bryce Cordingley, Gavin Snow, Vincent Milantoni, Michael Jackman, Bradley Somers, Mathew Hill and Ryan Marshall. Dong was part of the peewee Hawks' team that won provincial gold last year, which was the OMLA's first Ontario championship team since the 2002 bantam squad that featured current NHL superstar John Tavares. Now, Oakville has two Ontario titles and three provincial silvers in the past two seasons. "Our organization has gone from an organization that was competitive to one of the top-notch organizations in Ontario," Cordingley said. "We are very grateful for having the TRAC in Oakville, and we're very grateful for having a lot of NLL players living here in Oakville. But it's easy to (point to) that. It's the volunteers that we have, the people, the executive, the leadership. That's the foundation of it all... it's all about people pulling the rope in the same direction." Peewees and midgets claim Ontario silver The Mimico Mountaineers denied Oakville a sweep of all three titles up for grabs last weekend, downing the Hawks 8-4 in the peewee final and 2-1 in the midget championship. Oakville's peewees went 3-1-1 in round-robin action, the lone loss coming 2-1 to Mimico. In the Hawks' other games, they tied Orangeville 6-6 and defeated Burlington 7-1, Brampton 7-6 and Whitby 7-2. The midget Hawks won four of five opening-round contests, prevailing over St. Catharines (6-4), Mimico (4-3), Kitchener (4-1) and Six Nations (6-2). Their round-robin loss came at the hands of Orangeville (5-2).
