Terry Fox Run especially poignant this year for Team Max by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver 5 | Friday, August 21, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Max Khan will be missed at this year's Terry Fox Run -- set for Sept. 20 at Coronation Park -- but his spirit will carry on with the team bearing his name. The veteran Town councillor, father and Toronto trial lawyer and three-time cancer survivor, who died suddenly in March, was a big supporter of Oakville's annual Terry Fox Run. Ward 2 Town Councillor Pam Damoff, a friend and colleague of Khan's who helped form Team Max in 2012, said it is an honour to preserve his memory at the event. "It's something I'm really proud to do. I do get emotional, but it's a way that I can honour a friend. As sad as it is, it also makes me feel good to be able to do that for him," said Damoff. "I wish I had never had to put in a team for Max. I wish he never had cancer come back, I wish he hadn't gone. We've set a big goal for the Terry Fox Run this year. "I know the community will come together and Team Max will be a big part of that... to honour someone everyone in Oakville had so much respect for and loved so much," she added. The local Terry Fox Run aims to carry forward Terry's dream of collecting a dollar from every Canadian. Collecting $1 from every Oakville resident would raise approximately $187,200. Damoff said the Team Max group has a tradition of going to the park before the run to remember loved ones who have passed away. "Max will be one of the people that we'll be thinking about. I know I'll cry and I know I will miss him. It's emotional, but it's also comforting in some way," said Damoff. "As the sun rises you just feel the presence of people who aren't with us. It's going to be tough this year, but he will be there with us, watching over us." Team Max started with 10 members and has grown. It's expected to be larger this year because Khan touched so many people and it's a "way of remembering Max," Damoff said. "Max also reached out to the Oakville community when we had a team and invited them all to a barbecue one year. Rather than having them come out on run day to the site, he invited them to a barbecue and raised more than $2,000," said Damoff.
