MOHA skate and equipment sale Sept. 12 This year's Minor Oaks Hockey Association's annual skate and equipment sale will take place Saturday, Sept. 12 at Oakville Arena. The community event provides families with the opportunity to purchase gently-used hockey equipment at lower prices. Skates, shin pads, hockey pants, elbow pads and shoulder pads will be available at the sale, along with goalie gear, sticks, jerseys and other paraphernalia. Cash will be the only acceptable method of payment. Families wishing to sell their gently-used equipment can drop off items between 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10 or Friday, Sept. 11. There will be a $2 processing fee for each item, and equipment experts will help sellers price the items for sale. Items are sold on a consignment basis, with a percentage of proceeds going to support local hockey programs. Only items in good condition will be accepted and organizers reserve the right to decline equipment that does not meet their standards. Helmets and jocks/jills cannot be accepted for sale. Midget A's shave heads for cancer awareness The matching haircuts of Baseball Oakville midget Tier 1 baseball players these days aren't just a sign of team unity. They're also a show of support for their families and friends, after a difficult six months that saw three players lose a grandparent to cancer and another, Matt Damery, learn his mother Marilyn has breast cancer. The A's team of 17- and 18-year-olds recently had their heads shaved at Oakville Park to promote cancer awareness. "Marilyn is a person who holds a positive outlook on this grey cloud and is facing this challenge head-on, and with the support of her family, friends and by this special group of players who are her extended family," said Kimberley Holloway, wife of A's manager John Holloway. "What started as a simple idea has rolled into an unexpected touching idea: `Why don't we shave our heads to support Mrs. Damery?' And from there, it has snowballed. Players, coaches and past players are stepping up on this support." Members of the A's team are Imran Haider, Connor DeJonge, Andrew Cuiffreda, Ryan Soroka, Benjamin Tejeda, Braedan Pauley, Joe Vitale, Justin Vollum, Mitchell Vernon, Alex Vides, Hector Pina, Michael Lopez, Jonah Lazar and Matt Damery. Russ Vernon, Rob Donaldson, Will Mousseau and Blake Donaldson also coach the team.
