Wednesday, April 25, 2001 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER D3 B e s t W h e e l s O a k v i l l e Toyota 4Runner offers one-touch four-wheel drive (Continued from page D2) this I drove had a list price of $38,955. Last up is the Limited and it is lavish ly equipped with automatic climate con trol; power dual-stage heated front seats; power moonroof with roof rack; leather seating surfaces and woodgrain trim, and the premium sound system with CD changer. The version of this I drove had a MSRP of $40,945. All 4Runners for 2001 come with the lusty 3.4-litre, 24 valve V6 that produces 183 hp and 217 ft/lb of torque. It has the ability to tow 2,286 kg (5,000 lb). For 2001, Toyota has standardized its fourspeed electronic automatic transmission with lock-up. Every 4Runner for 2001 is equipped with the Multi-Mode One Touch 4WD system. This system is integrated with an Automatic Disconnecting Differential (ADD). The result is the benefit of offroad 4WD with the ability to travel in 4WD on dry pavement which is like hav ing full-time 4WD. This One-Touch 4WD (as Toyota likes to call it) was only avail able last year on the Limited. For off-roading, 4Runner borrows the highly advanced A-Trac (Active Traction Control) system debuted on the 2001 Sequoia full-size SUV. It works with the anti-lock brake system and the Engine Control Module to sense if one or more wheels is slipping. When this happens braking may be applied to the wheel(s) that is(are) spinning. Engine power is also adjusted so that torque that would have been lost through slippage is routed to the remaining wheels (wheel) with grip. In real life it works in a similar fashion to a limited slip differential, but without the weight and complication of an extra transfer case. For highway or secondary road use, the 2001 4Runner offers Vehicle Skid Control (VSC) which is Toyota's spin (pardon the pun) on pitch and yaw con trol. In simple terms, if the 4Runner sens es the vehicle is going out of control, it uses selective braking to various wheels while decreasing engine power to get the truck running back on an even keel. I drove the 4Runner on a stretch of gravel road purposely trying to hang the rear end out. Every time I tried, the system took over and also sounded a beeper in the cabin to let me know it was being engaged. I found the beeper distracting, giving my mind one more thing to worry about while trying to come to grips with the VSC asserting itself, but it's a sensible warning about a driver starting to lose control. In terms of style, 4Runner has gobs of it, especially the Limited I drove in Millenium Silver Metallic. Outside the front grille has been brought more into the family line as shown on 2001 Tacoma and Tundra, while the rear has a multi-reflec tor type integrated taillight assembly. With the standard 50/50 split folding rear seats, cargo space is 1,262 litres (44.6 cu. ft). The button that engages 4WD is found on the centre instrument panel (IP) where it is easy to reach with a flick of the right hand when you spot a situation where 4WD is required. On the transmission tunnel is the shift lever for 4Lo, Neutral and 4Hi. When you want to return to 2WD (rear drive), just push the IP button again. It's simple and it works cleanly with none of the centre differential lag if you try to shift on the fly. I drove the 4Runner on a combination of gravel road and a rocky logging road. Going over the rocky section I left the dif ferential in 4Hi and simply drove uphill with 4Lo never needed, or indeed, con templated. During the decent, we were in heavy dust kicked up by the convoy of other Toyota trucks and that meant using the brakes a fair bit. For 2001, Electronic Brake Distribution (EDB) is a standard item. In a panic situa tion the human reaction is to hit the brake pedal with every ounce of strength in your leg and that often means locking up all four wheels. What EBD does is sense the weight distri bution in the vehicle and apply braking so that front and rear wheels get the optimum amount of braking force. Couple this with traction con trol, and you have the ability to steer through dangerous situa tions. On the highway portion, the 4Runner has become even quieter, proving once again that attention to interior noise is a Toyota hallmark. I had trouble even hearing the aggressively treaded P225/75 15-inch mud and snow tires on the asphalt at 100 kmh. On some trucks I've driven in the past mud and snow tires could drown out the stereo. The pleasant drive and dri ving conditions were made more so by respectable gas mileage for a vehicle in this segment. The 3.4-litre pro vides 14.4L/100 km (20 mpg) city and 11.4L/100 km (25 mpg) highway. Transport Canada estimates it will cost an owner $1,436 in fuel to operate a 2001 4Runner for a year. Toyota is calling 2001 their "Year of the Truck" and they are rolling out lots of new seg ment busters while keeping their bread-and-butter vehicles like the 4Runner abreast of the competition. One of the first to start the craze towards sensibly-sized SUVs, the Toyota 4Runner for 2001 is still o f the top mid-size contenders on the hill. Production starts in May (Continued from page D1) A o c ii -road trails, including the famed Rubicon Trail. To ensure Jeep's essential character, Liberty provides standard Command Trac® and optional Selec Trac® transfer cases with low range mode, uniframe construction, generous suspension travel, impressive approach and departure angles.
