Excuse me. C ould you repeat that? If y o u 've ever been to a session o f O akville tow n council, y o u 've heard this. If y o u 've ever w atched council on Cogeco, Cable 10, y o u 've likely seen flashed across the screen the m essage "T he audio problem is not the fault o f the station, it originates at the Town H all." Lots o f controversial issues get debated at Town Hall, but the one thing no one ever disagrees w ith is the fact that the council cham ber acoustics are terrible. It's been talked about, studied, adjusted to no avail. Prom ises have been m ade to address it in the tow n hall retrofit th at's now underw ay, but Ward 2 Councillor Fred O liver doesn't w ant to wait. "This, to me, is em barrassing," said O liver about the m es sage on Cable 10. "W hat is w rong w ith installing a proper (public address) system now, one w hich could, and should, be used in the new facility?" asked O liver w ho raised the debate, again, at T uesday's council meeting. "T he issue is not the sound system, it's the w alls," assert ed Ward 3 Councillor Tedd Smith. M ayor Ann M ulvale said the retrofit w in low er the ceiling in the cham ber and also im prove the w all covering (now brick). W ard 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll said technology exists to adapt a sound system to poor acoustics like those in the coun cil chamber. "W e've all suffered through this for a long tim e," pro nounced W ard 1 C ouncillor K evin Flynn. Council w ants a report detailing options, costs and a con sultation with Cogeco, w hich broadcasts town council m eet ings, to be ready in six weeks.
