Vilela notched Oakville's first goal of the game -- shortly after Blue Devils captain Taylor McNamara was ejected late in the first half -- and added two more early in the second half, giving him a team-high 16 goals on the season. Oakville blew the game open with markers by Roman Young, Christian Kuszawich and Oakville Soccer Club call-up Adam Gould. "Our young players continue to assist us greatly as we approach the... end of the season," said Blue Devils coach Duncan Wilde, whose first-year team has a record of 14 wins, one draw and two losses and holds a four-point lead on the Vaughan Azzurri for top spot in the League1 standings. "Our back four was very solid today and that will be vital for us approaching the final five games of the season," Crusaders win their eighth straight Ontario Rugby Union U14 boys' title The Oakville Crusaders continue to prove there is strength in numbers. The club's under-14 boys' team scored three unanswered tries in the second half to down the Brantford Harlequins 27-7 and win the Ontario Rugby Union U14 boys' blue championship Sunday at Fletcher's Fields in Markham. "That final game was the best they've played all season," said coach Kerry Williamson. The victory continued a remarkable run by Oakville, which claimed the under-14 title for the eighth straight year. Williamson said the program for young players that has been developed by the Crusaders is a big reason for the success. "The junior and mini programs have easily double, sometimes triple, the number of players of anyone in the Ontario Rugby Union," Williamson said. "That's a testament to the junior rugby programs the Crusaders have." Oakville went undefeated in ORU play this season. It rolled over Oshawa 73-5 in the semifinals before running into Brantford, its toughest opponent of the season. Oakville had been the only team to beat the Harlequins this season, scoring a 15-point victory. In the championship game, Oakville jumped in front with a try 10 minutes into the game. Brantford quickly tied it up with a try of its own. Oakville regained the lead before the half and then shut down its opponents in the second half while adding three tries to seal the victory. Williamson said because the Crusaders introduce players to the sport at a young age, many have been playing together for as many as six years. He said the players have continued to refine their skills since joining Crusaders. "It's all the same skills, but they learn to do them faster and execute them with more accuracy and proficiency," he said. Still, there were a few first-time rugby players on this year's team. But regardless of their experience, the Oakville coach said the team was able to perform as a cohesive unit. "It's a very well-rounded team," he said. We have a few standouts, but they wouldn't be able to do what they do without their teammates. Definitely team play was our strength. They all played really well together. Playing in support, they were always there for each other." -- Herb Garbutt Blue Devils attacker Filipe Vilela leaps over sliding Windsor defender Luke Husbands en route to the Windsor net Sunday at Sheridan College.
