Nearly 250 members of OPSEU Local 207, the professional paramedics of Halton Region, will be sporting pink epaulettes to raise awareness -- and funds -- for the Canadian Cancer Society through October and November. "Everybody's been touched in some way or another by cancer, whether it be a family member, friend or a co-worker," said OPSEU Local 207 President Michael Lawson, explaining the impetus behind the campaign. "We've personally had five co-workers who have passed away over the last 15 years from various forms of cancer." Halton EMS workers will be asked to make a donation and help raise funds personally. While October is typically known as Breast Cancer Awareness month, Lawson said money raised would support not only breast cancer research, but also other forms of cancer through the Canadian Cancer Society. The two-month long initiative will also remember past Halton paramedics who have lost their lives to cancer, including late OPSEU Local 207 members Gord Armes, Derek Mitchell, Roy Griffin, Don Earl and Sue Pearce. Meanwhile Halton paramedic Catherine Townend, 25, said she's looking forward to adding the pink epaulettes to her uniform in support of cancer awareness. "I think it's something very important in our day-to-day job (to show support)," said Townend, who has been a paramedic for three years. "A lot of people in this area suffer from cancer. Some of our personal colleagues, including my personal supervisor. I have a few family members who have suffered with cancer and passed away and a few friends who have been touched by cancer as well. She continued, "I think it's something we deal with day in and day out and something that people have to live a long drawn out process to deal with. It's really hard to watch patients suffer."
