The 28-year-old Port Burwell resident has been cycling across Canada since July 18 to raise money for SickKids Hospital in honour of Oakville's Maddie Costantini, who died last year of a brain tumour. Thompson told the Oakville Beaver he wasn't able to be around much while Maddie battled diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma, a rare type of cancer. His job working on a boat outside of Canada kept him away from home for months at a time, which also made it difficult for him to participate in local fundraising events that were close to his cousin's heart. "This is my way of doing something to help support and raise money and awareness," he said in a phone interview Wednesday afternoon, from the outskirts of Quebec City. "I just wanted to do something to contribute. "No child should ever be given a death sentence like that," he added. Thompson started his journey across Canada last month from Vancouver and has been averaging about 150 kilometres a day on the road. He's been battling different terrain and has been subject to the elements while carrying 60 pounds of gear that includes a tent, sleeping bag, clothes and tools to fix his bike. Despite some tough moments along the trip, he said it's been an experience of a lifetime. Thompson said he's thankful for all the support he's been getting along the journey from friends, family and even strangers. To date, he's raised more than $5,000 for pediatric brain tumour research. By the time he reaches Newfoundland in mid-September, he hopes to have reached his goal of $10,000. The Costantini family said they're touched by Thompson's gesture. "We're very honoured that he thought of her and wanted to take this challenge on," said Saundra Costantini, Maddie's mother. She said as the family continues to work through their loss, it's comforting to see how many others have been touched by Maddie. "It's great to see that she is being remembered," said Saundra. "That was her biggest fear -- that she would be forgotten." To follow Thompson's journey, visit https://www.facebook.com/ groups/1677052139195281.
