Oakville residents will lace up for the annual local run on Sunday, Sept. 20 at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W. "The support of local businesses, service clubs and families is so important to the Oakville community and to the success of the Terry Fox Run," said Pam Damoff, chair of the Oakville Terry Fox Run. "By teaming up with the Terry Fox Run to raise funds for cancer research, these folks are continuing a long-standing commitment to improving the lives of everyone touched by cancer." Participants will choose to walk, bike, board, roller skate, run, push a stroller or walk the dog along a lakeside two-kilometre, 5k or 10k route. The official start of the event is 10 a.m., with registration opening at 9 a.m. Opening ceremonies will once again be hosted by former Toronto Argonaut Dan Ferrone and O Canada will be performed by Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance students at Sheridan College. There is no registration fee or minimum donation required with this year's fundraising goal set at $187,200 or the equivalent of $1 from every Oakville resident. Last year's Oakville Terry Fox Run raised a record total $132,500. Meanwhile, last week, Sammy Rawdah, owner of Sammy's Famous Old-Fashioned Chip Wagon in Bronte, held a Terry Fox fundraising lunch and donated more than $900 to the local run. Participants are encouraged to car pool and reminded there is no parking at Coronation Park itself, and to observe all "No Parking" signs on side streets nearby. The morning of the run will feature a kids' activity tent, music and food. T-shirts for the 35th anniversary Terry Fox Run will be available for sale on the day ($20$25) with all proceeds going to the Terry Fox Foundation. The Bronte Harbour Chiropractic Clinic and Oakville Massage and Wellness Clinic will be on hand to treat participants. This year's run is once again plastic-waterbottle free and participants are asked to bring their own refillable water containers. Compostable cups will also be available. Returning this year will be the `In Memory Of' and `In Honour Of' roads signs that will be on sale for $5, honouring a friend or family member who has experienced or lost their battle with cancer. Teams can still register or form their own team at www.terryfox.org and click on the `Team Up for Terry' tab, or on-site on the morning of the run. Volunteers are also needed to help out on the day with everything from marshalling along the run route and working the registration table to cheering on run finishers.
