Parkinson's SuperWalk comes to Oakville Saturday by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 15 | Friday, September 11, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Parkinson's disease is a debilitating condition. Just ask Phyllis Egbert, who has not only had to watch her sister Lily live with the neurodegenerative brain disorder for the past 26 years, but also sees others who are living with the disease and taking her exercise class at Oakville's St. Jude's Anglican Church. The 73-year-old Mississauga resident, who has been instructing the class for the last 20 years at the William Street church, said it's difficult seeing the toll Parkinson's has on each individual, with many losing their mobility. For example, Lily has gone through two pallidotomy surgeries and other treatments to lessen her symptoms over the years, but her condition continues to get progressively worse. "Right now there's no cure, so in that way, it's quite sad," said Egbert. She said over the last two years, her sister hasn't been able to attend her weekly exercise class offered to those with Parkinson's because she's unsteady on her feet. Egbert will be taking part in the national Parkinson SuperWalk tomorrow (Saturday, Sept. 12) to do what she can to raise awareness, money and support for the cause, which is so near and dear to her heart. She'll be walking at the Oakville site at RioCan Oakville Place, 240 Leighland Ave., connected to the Oakville chapter of the Parkinson Society of Canada through a friend of hers at a tennis club. Soon after, they were introduced to the exercise class at St. Jude's, which was something both she and her sister could enjoy together with others going through similar situations. Egbert became more heavily involved in the Oakville chapter of the Parkinson Society of Canada and ended up taking over the helm after six years because the instructor could no longer teach the class. She's been leading it every Tuesday since. see Advocating on p.18 Phyllis Egbert beginning at 10 a.m. "It's a worthy cause," said Egbert, who participated in the last three annual Burlington walks and the Mississauga one in years past. "It's getting more prevalent, so we need to work on finding a cure." According to the Parkinson Society Canada, 10 people are diagnosed with Parkinson's every day. Between 2011-31, the number of Canadians diagnosed with Parkinson's is expected to double to more than 163,700. Egbert said when her sister was diagnosed 26 years ago, at the age of 45, they were Great minds don't think alike. Elementary school teachers are typically responsible for the full curriculum.
