Following a social hour with delicious treats and refreshments, library staff will take centre stage at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts (OCPA) and present some of the best books they've read lately. A mix of fiction and non-fiction reads will be presented, along with one beautifully-illustrated graphic memoir. Tickets cost $15 and are available at all library branches and online through the OCPA's box office, www.oakvillecentre.ca. All attendees will have a chance to win a complete library of the 18 books presented and leave with a brimming to-read list. · In Conversation With... Lawrence Hill (Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.) -- Oakville Public Library, the OCPA and A Different Drummer Books have partnered to host Lawrence Hill, award-winning author of The Book of Negroes. Published in 2007, The Book of Negroes became an international blockbuster and won a host of accolades, including the Commonwealth Writers' Prize and CBC's Canada Reads. It was also adapted into a miniseries that was an international CBC-TV co-production. His newest novel, The Illegal, released on Tuesday, was inspired by survival stories of undocumented refugees around the world. Hill has been working on the novel for five years and its release is quite timely. Though it only just debuted, The Illegal is already being prepped for television by CBC-TV . Toronto-based production company Conquering Lion Pictures has also purchased the adaptation rights, which means The Illegal may be hitting the silver screen in the future.
