Terry Fox Run is this Sunday In 1980, Terry Fox had said, if he couldn't finish it, then the Marathon of Hope "better continue." Thirty-five years later, the Marathon of Hope has not only gone on but walks now take place in communities across the country every year. In Oakville, the annual run has raised more than $1.9 million alone for cancer research since the inaugural event in 1982. The run, combined with local fundraising events that take place every year, has raised more than $4.2 million since then towards The Terry Fox Foundation. This year's Oakville Terry Fox Run is set for Sunday (Sept. 20) at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W., with registration opening at 9 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. start. "The Terry Fox Foundation is proud of the fact that 84 per cent of all funds donated -- by Canadians of all ages and through Terry Fox Runs around the world -- go directly to research into treatments for all forms of cancer," stated a media release. Oakville's 2014 run raised a record total of $132,500. For the event's 35th anniversary, organizers have set the goal at $187,200 -- the equivalent of $1 from every Oakville resident. Pledge sheets can be downloaded at www. terryfoxrun.org. Participants will choose to walk, bike, board, roller skate, run, push a stroller or walk the dog along a lakeside two-kilometre, 5k or 10k route. Opening ceremonies will once again be hosted by former Toronto Argonaut Dan Ferrone and O Canada will be performed by Bachelor of Music Theatre Performance students at Sheridan College. The event is non-competitive and familyfriendly with leashed dogs welcomed as participants. There is no registration fee or minimum donation required. A team of experienced, open-water swimmers returns to this year's event not to pound the pavement, but swim laps in support of the Terry Fox Run. "We are excited that Brenda Lussier will be among them," stated a media release. "This year, Brenda successfully swam across Lake Erie, becoming the first deaf swimmer to do so. She will be joined by a number of impressive swimmers, including Madhu Nagaraja and Rob Kent, both of whom successfully crossed Lake Ontario in 2012." Participants are encouraged to carpool, reminded there is no parking at Coronation Park and to observe all "No Parking" signs on side streets nearby. Volunteers are still needed to help out on run morning with everything from marshalling along the run route and working the registration table to cheering on run finishers. For more information or to volunteer, contact Cathy Duddeck at cduddeck@hotmail.com. Students will receive volunteer hours for their efforts. 17 | Thursday, September 17, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com For more news, visit insidehalton.com/oakville-on PLATINUM GOLD Thank You!
