She has multiple myeloma, a deadly blood cancer that affects 7,500 Canadians each year. While there have been advancements in treatment to help prolong life expectancy, there is no cure. Since 2011, Noreen has been on three different kinds of chemotherapy. When the third stopped working, doctors switched back to the first chemotherapy treatment she was on, said Delaney, 76. The couple had "no idea this type of cancer existed. "We presumed that, like many other cancers, it could be eradicated," said Delaney, who has lived in Oakville for nearly 40 years. Delaney will be joined by his two children and grandchildren as they walk together around Mississauga's Lake Aquitaine Park, 6655 Glen Erin Dr. They'll be among a number of patients, caregivers and supporters participating in the Oakville's Noreen and Brian Delaney will be at this Sunday's Multiple Myeloma March. The Myeloma Canada event for the HaltonPeel community is one of 11 Multiple Myeloma Marches across Canada aimed at raising awareness and funds for the incurable and little-known form of blood cancer. Proceeds will be dedicated to advance myeloma research through innovative clinical trials across the country and to provide educational services to patients. Since its inception in 2009, the event has raised more than $1.5 million and has become a symbol of community and strength for patients, caregivers and health care providers in their battle to find a cure. Although this is only the second fivekilometre march Delaney is taking part in, he said it's a meaningful way to do his part in raising awareness and funds to help find a cure. He said his family is doing what they can to deal with the hand they've been dealt. "Sometimes it gets you down and there are some struggles," he shared. "Overall though, you just got to be positive as you can and deal with the things you can deal with -- and the ones that you can't, you gotta let them go. You can't let it eat away at you." Although the advances in multiple myeloma treatments are helping prolong life expectancy with median survival rates having increased to more than 10 years from three-five years, it remains incurable with 1,300 dying from the blood cancer annually.
