www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 24, 2015 | 10 Flippance and Carr returning to South Oakville Centre by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver On Oct. 1, a familiar name will return home to South Oakville Centre. Flippance and Carr, a retailer/installer of audio, home theatre and television equipment, is returning to the former Hopedale Mall, located at 1515 Rebecca St., because the business is growing, according to owner Martin Rudnicki. For the last 30 years, the company has been situated in Bronte Village Mall on Lakeshore Road West. "We've outgrown this particular spot. We just want to move into premises that are a little bit more conducive to us being able to service our community a little bit better. It reflects the growth of our business," said Rudnicki. "We're moving because we want to better ourselves and for the growth of the company." Opened in 1961 by original owners Joan Flippance and Carr is moving to South Oakville Centre. After 33 years at Bronte Village Mall, it's moving back to its original home, then called Hopedale Mall, where it opened in 1963 at 1515 Rebecca St. Owner Martin Rudnicki, right, is pictured with employee Kevin Cherney and a TV set sold in the era when the store first opened. | photo by Riziero Vertolli Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) and John Flippance and Barb and Sid Carr, the Oakville retail store first came to Hopedale Mall in 1963. Rudnicki bought the business in 1984 and moved it to Bronte Village Mall in 1985. "Food City was (where Sobeys is) at the time and no one but us was in here. We pioneered this mall in 1985," said Rudnicki. "We doubled the sales going from there (Hopedale Mall) to here. It was a great move." He noted Hopedale was an "open-air mall" at the time the business moved there in 1963 and there was a gravel road that started at Third Line. At one point, Flippance and Carr had a service department, which no longer exists, and six staff -- the same number of staff that the business currently employs, Rudnicki said. "Hopedale was a great start. It was our home for (22 years). We saw other opportunities to move to an up-and-coming area called Bronte," said Rudnicki. see Store on p.16 Dr. Vanessa Milich & Associates Family Dental Care Encouraging Healthy and Happy Smiles Caring for Oakville Families for 10 years Welcoming New Patients Evening and Saturday Appointments Great Family DininG For over 40 years! The town currently licenses traditional taxis and accessible taxis. New technology has led to considerable changes in the industry, and the town has been approached on a number of issues including: non-traditional forms of taxi operation, pricing, fairness and competition, contracting services and accessibility requirements. For these reasons the Town of Oakville is undertaking a comprehensive review of its taxi by-law and is consulting with the public, taxi drivers and owners. The information received will be used to formulate a recommendation to Council later this year. Ever use a taxi service in Oakville? Tell us about it. Members of the public are encouraged to complete an online survey related to the taxi service you are currently receiving. Visit oakville.ca to learn more and to complete the survey.
