No, every spring I restock our pond and every summer the heron, looking every inch majestic (and oddly prehistoric), swoops into our lives and divests us of all life aquatic, from sh to frogs to what I'm sure he thinks are terribly tasty toads. Then last year, big bird failed to show up. Affording us a swell summer, an awesome autumn, and no long-necked nuisance imperiling our goldies. Consequently, our pond population ourished. Small sh grew hearty and huge, and those big sh began courting. They could be seen sneaking off into secluded sections of the pond, making bedroom eyes at each other, and embracing amongst the algae. Nature took its course and between last summer and this summer, we had one batch of babies after another. Our pond was the envy of all ponds. Our pond was party central. And then, one week ago, he returned. I actually have a picture of him perched atop the cupola on the pool shed, taking stock, biding his time as herons do, ensuring the coast was clear for a safe shing expedition. Strange, how a heron can turn a man into a loon. I went into full-on crazy mode, a proud parent fully prepared to protect his progeny (or, at least, his gold- sh). I bought a $50 fake alligator that the experts assured would scare off the predator. At one point during his weekend of shing, I saw the heron actually standing in the pond. Right beside that $50 fake alligator. I think they'd become friends. I considered buying a gun. Nothing too involved. Your basic bazooka. My wife, picturing me shooting up the backyard -- blasting holes in everything but the bird -- talked me out of it. Instead, I bought a few cans of tennis balls and spent 48 hours throwing out my arm; honestly, I believe he found this game of dodgeball to be a nice diversion from all the tiresome over- shing and over-eating. Herons are nothing if not persistent. Despite my constant vigil, despite my erce determination to protect those sh, if I took my eyes off the pond for one second, he'd be back in there, knee-deep, shing away. Suf ce to say, it was a weekend from hell. And at the end of it, the pond was as empty as my soul. According to my wife, over the course of that weekend, I'd been transformed into my father. I cringed, recalling how I used to laugh until I cried over my father's fanatical and ultimately futile attempts to keep the squirrels in his backyard out of his bird feeders. Suddenly, I could empathize with poor pops. Now, I understood his pain. For, like my father before me, I'd been outwitted, outplayed. Dad, by a bunch of bushy-tailed squirrels.
